Those saying it is dated already knew it was made in , and those saying it was offensive or bland misunderstood the whole point, as with most cancel culture.
It was advanced at the time because if people understood it they would know all of these things and realize that as a dark comedy, it actually had a serious message against misogyny, assault, suicide, homophobia, and every ist and ism people are proclaiming said this movie glorified, along with many other taboos by today's standards and at the same time is all the detractors ever want to talk about.
Rather than trying to sound intelligent, it's haters actually should suspend their ignorance and hatred of the movie itself and pay attention to it.
I doubt most watched it till the end. Heathers is a cult classic for a reason. If we can't laugh at the absurdity of the world's problems, we likely will do nothing about them and instead just talk about them.
This is the whole point of dark comedies, grow up people. Slater is brilliant as always! Heathers is considered a classic teen comedy, and maybe at the time it was groundbreaking and hit the zeitgeist in just the right spot.
But I think that's the problem. It is very dated, very clearly a product of the s, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But the elements of the s that it exemplifies are the worst possible elements it could have chosen: the cynicism and the giant hairstyles, the casual racism, sexual assault, and homophobia, and oh my goodness the shoulder pads.
I realize this is a satire, and I think it could have worked if the storytelling was tighter, less meandering, and if Jo March wasn't supposed to be a murderer.
But even satire needs to have a moral compass, if only to have a standard from which to deviate, and I don't feel like Heathers does. It made me feel sad, and not in a good, cathartic way.
I had never watched this prior and I saw this on Prime and tried to watch it 2 times and became disillusioned so went elsewhere; It seemed like it was heading into stupid humor and was going to be too shallow for my tastes.
I finally went over to IMDB and read reviews there. It was really popular. A day came when I felt more like I might make it through and tried again.
I am so glad I did. Thank you, Prime for adding this to stream on here. I loved it after it grabbed me somewhat later on than when I had given up prior.
It is teenagers, but it is also rated R and has some things that are iffy for that age, but High School is like this so use caution.

It is Serious Dark humor, and it seems to play out the extremes of the way teenagers and high schools with with quite a bit of reality in some areas could be played out dramatically.

This movie is a snapshot of the late 80's, early 90's: big hair, shoulder pads, homophobia, clique culture, outsiders, quiet rage boiling over into questionable choices, hippie teachers, football players and cheerleaders being the highest form of high school life Ok, so some of those things still endure today, for good or for bad.
You know how it is, you're one of the popular kids, even if your name isn't Heather, and you're a jerk to people you shouldn't be to fit in, and a way bigger jerk arrives and OMG, is he hawt.
And enticing. And ok, so maybe you do some questionable things, because looooooove. Or lust. It's a fine line in high school, hormones going off the charts with no idea how to control them.
