His wife, Elizabeth Helena Bonham Carter , seeks the treatment of speech therapist Lionel Logue Geoffrey Rush that follows unconventional methods and relationship, and Bertie gives up the treatment on the first day.

However, after listening to the session that was recorded by Lionel, Bertie returns to the treatment.

Immediately afterward, there is a crisis in the government and Britain declares war with Germany. King George VI needs to make a speech to his compatriots, and his friend Lionel helps him using an unorthodox technique.

Sign In. Edit The King's Speech Jump to: Summaries 4 Synopsis 1. But how does one achieve such artistic perfection? However, as with all skills, practise makes perfect.

Through hard work and diligence, a skilled orator can be born. Only by throwing oneself in the deep end and overcoming fear can one begin to progress.

If you truly want to improve, then you will. The best scene of a fabulous film often lies at the top of the climax, the aphex of achievement which is shown in a realistic light.

We find ourselves willing the worlds for the King in this scene, as we have followed him through his struggles to overcome his difficulty of public speaking.

Not to find fault or to judge, but with their earnest need of confirmation, for motivation and for feeling that what is happening is a must in order to defend the freedom which we they have so long been fighting for.

Some speeches are of great worth and of great consequence. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we do, and if your favourite scene is not in agreement with our choice, please feel free to get in touch, handing us your suggestions and thoughts.

We find it important that we partake and learn from history, and storytelling is how we learn through the eyes of the narrator, from the personal and relocatable perspective.

All great men were just meh, nothing special other than the rise to the occasion, and often that rise takes the form of hard work, dedication and struggle, and often, as in this case it those struggles take place over a long period of time.

We relish this scene as showing the human ability to overcome difficulty. It is only through overcoming our obstacles, though facing our fears that we learn and grow.

One of the most suiting phrases for it, and this is agreed by the team here, is that the best way to learn something new or improve on something that you are already doing is simply to practice it.

By replicating, as much as possible, the main event, for example. If you are going to present your topic or your argument to you family, class, friends, to your boss in the workplace or anything else of the sort where you need to win allegiance and votes for your project or proposal, then rhetoric can come in hand.

If you are new to the term, it simply means to be powerful and persuasive to the listener, argue and make your points in a striking way as to win their favour.

Your goal is to capture their attention and bring it to the important point of focus which is the centre of your present work. With practice your rhetoric can increase tremendously, by doing something so small as just noticing your own conversations and own speaking, even when in a casual way and to a friend, is a task you can set yourself to learn a great deal.

Just by observation and awareness of yourself and what it is that you are trying to do, you can greatly help the progress along the way with keeping some few very important things in mind.

Many would see it as unfair, that some ar born with the privilege to rule whilst others are born into a life of nothing but toil. A valid point in our current day of democracy, however the questions arises.

What of the good kings, there have been many deposits and horrid rulers who have made their people suffer to no end, however there are also examples in history of kings ruling with integrity and with his people in mind.

A good king, or ruler, if you go back as old as the ancient Greeks, you find is one of virtue and integrity, one who is able to set his own human condition aside for the benefit of others and thence be blessed and also enjoying the benefit of a free ticket to heaven, since who rules have been appointed by his parents as much as by God.

Good kings are philosophers they said, and in the ideal there are still lesser humans and a proletariat is needed to be able to build the dream societies for the selected few.

Although the economics of the day reflect the same structure much has changed. Today our rulers, our kings, namely our politicians are governed purely by their avarice or engagement with the game of power, not great for the bottom.

The top must be ran in a great way for the slaves to have valuable lives, enjoyable ones, appreciated ones. Perhaps that is the difference between the good ruler and the bad one, the good one keep the whole image in mind and is aware that even the ones on the bottom of the ladder ar humans, whilst the bad ones treat it as numbers of cattle too far from their reality to even bother thinking about it.

Public speaking is much different to say the speaking which happens when you have a conversation with someone, in many ways public speaking is like a performance with set lines and with a broadcasting element.

The communication is largely one way, however that is not to forget the great speakers who knows how to read their audience, who feels what the mass is feeling and who have learned, the hard way, through trial and error what works and not.

Speaking in public to an audience is a skill which one can practice, and our favourite film is most definitely a great example of that train-ability.

Hard work and effort is all that you need, continuously trying to learn what you are wanting to learn, and if that happens to be how to speak and communicate better with an audience, then just keep at it.

You will become used to handling yourself with the nerves present, there is no getting around some things, and the excitement or anxiety that we feel when faced with a great audience is simply something that we must learn to live with, learn to perform with, and learn how to manage should it be of a highly intrusive nature and effect performance.

As the king and hero in our favourite story thought our history Kings, although not always good, have been seen by the people as a symbol of the current state.

What is right, what is wrong was once determined by such a one person or family, and many kings were invested with the power of God, some even said to have been in communication with him.

We say him, as kings were male as the stereotypical male archetype had dominated views for a long time. The questions could be asked why, and perhaps the dominance, or the tendency for dominance in the male perspective took charge with violence, power and authority.

Times have certainly come a long way since then, and we are happy to see that better and more equal ways of seeing has evolved, even if there is still plenty of work to be done around the edges.

You have to keep in mind that there were many who served the king, and were sworn to do so also by their dying breath.

Stage one may think, however is it not in our nature to adhere to some form of hierarchy. This is how each, also individual relationship can be seen.

When we look around today we see things much differently, but do we, really? How we as humans function on a cognitive level remains much the same, and the changes we see in behaviour might have something to do with the sheer mass of the population walking the globe today.

Us for one, being of the romantic types see our world evolved, yet much the same, what are your thoughts, feel free to get in touch and lend us a comment.

In order to create a better future, a more sophisticated and civilised one we need to study the past and ourselves. If you were to divide people, a suggestion for categorisation might be that of leaders and followers, and in a monarchy that type of thought is manifested in the world.

Looking backwards at the times of kings and emperors there we can learn much, not only about what the times were like and how people lived, but also about human nature.

Drawing a hard line between leaders and follower may be a tad far from the reality of things, with many other factors and circumstances involved things are seldom so black and white.

However with the right conditions there will be some who have a tendency to rise to the challenge and lead those in need of it.

From revolutionary times there is no doubt plenty to learn, and reading about the past is a also something that we highly recommend, as an activity to boost your own creativity.

So what are you? Do you have a tendency to want to lead or follow? What type of scenario would make you rise to the challenge, and what will you make of it?

There are valuable also personal lessons that the team here takes from having watched this film over and over again. But does what he can to face the issue head on.

A lesson which can be brought to the every day of each of us. A symbolic representation of an issue, much like many issues that we ourselves face in our day to day life.

So what do you do, turn around when things get tough, if there are rough spots do you avoid them looking for a different and easier way forward.

Like our hero in the film does, and by hard work and perseverance he overcomes the issue rather than run from it.

And you can imagine the pressure one would feel if there was a nation adding pressure to the situation. We hope that you enjoyed the film as well and that you could take part in the many lessons which it holds, and if you are one of the few who have not yet seen the motion picture, ensure that you get it done as soon as possible.

The team here recommends no other film as much as this one, and as one of the great ones sure to go down in history as a classic, you will not regret having given it the time of day.

One thing we find particularly striking and a salient quality of pure excellence with this film is the truly magnificent manuscript.

The dialogue enforce and supports the base on which the characters and setting is built. If you are searching for a perfect example of good screen writing, then here by all means you have of the best samples of modern cinematic art.

So today, the team here would like to bring praise to the wonderful writers behind the natural, understandable and highly resonating words which have brought this wonderful motion picture to life for us.

Something that they have our gratitude for bringing an exception to the ever declining quality of big budget films.

There have been a long row of different structures of power and regime throughout our history, and there is nothing to say that the democracy that we have landed in today is any better or worse.

It may persist for some time, as we also see democracy as one of the better forms of government today. There are many loop holes in the democratic system, and avoiding two party system issues, a public which is tailored to fit the global market and the free for all which is the current economic status.

Preparing to leave the room for the congratulations of those present, Logue mentions to the King that he still has difficulty enunciating w and the King jokes back, "I had to throw in a few so they'd know it was me.

As the Royal Family step onto the palace balcony and are applauded by the crowd, a title card explains that Logue, who received the Royal Victorian Order for service to the Crown, was always present at King George VI's speeches during the war and that they remained friends until the King's death from lung cancer in As a child, David Seidler developed a stammer, which he believes was caused by the emotional trauma of World War II and the murder of his grandparents during the Holocaust.

King George VI's success in overcoming his stammer inspired the young Seidler, "Here was a stutterer who was a king and had to give radio speeches where everyone was listening to every syllable he uttered, and yet did so with passion and intensity.

During the late s and s he voraciously researched the King, but found a dearth of information on Logue. Eventually Seidler contacted Valentine Logue, who agreed to discuss his father and make his notebooks available if the Queen Mother gave her permission.

She asked him not to do so in her lifetime, and Seidler halted the project. The Queen Mother died in Three years later, Seidler returned to the story during a bout of creative work inspired by a recovery from cancer.

His research, including a chance encounter with an uncle whom Logue had treated, indicated he used mechanical breathing exercises combined with psychological counselling to probe the underlying causes of the condition.

Thus prepared, Seidler imagined the sessions. He showed the finished screenplay to his wife, who liked it, but pronounced it too "seduced by cinematic technique".

She suggested he rewrite it as a stage play to focus on the essential relationship between the King and Logue. After he had completed it, he sent it to a few friends who worked in theatre in London and New York for feedback.

Lane started talking with Simon Egan and Gareth Unwin of Bedlam Productions , and they invited Seidler to London to rewrite the play again, this time for the screen.

Together, Lane and Bedlam Productions organised a reading of the play in Pleasance Theatre , a small house in north London, to a group of Australian expatriates, among whom was Tom Hooper 's mother.

She called her son and said, "I've found your next project". Instead of trying to contact his agent, Lane asked an Australian staff member to hand-deliver the script to Geoffrey Rush's house, not far away from hers in Melbourne.

Unwin reports that he received a four-page e-mail from Rush's manager admonishing them for the breach of etiquette, but ending with an invitation to discuss the project further.

If you hear the real speech, he's clearly coping with his stammer. But it's not a perfect performance. He's managing it. Hooper said some of the film's most memorable lines, such as at the climax, when Logue smiles and says, "You still stammered on the W" to the King, who replies, "I had to throw in a few so they would know it was me" were direct quotations from Logue's notes.

Once they met with Firth and heard him read for the part, Seidler and Hooper were convinced of his suitability for the role.

Most was shot in the three weeks before Christmas because Rush would be performing in a play in January. The schedule was further complicated by Bonham Carter's availability: she worked on Harry Potter during the week, so her scenes had to be filmed during the weekend.

To emphasise Logue's humble background, the entire street was transformed into one from s London. Large advertisements for among other things Bovril and fascism were added to walls, grit and grime to streets and buildings.

The production had asked for permission to film in the Abbey but were denied due to the demands of tourism. Its size allowed them to build sets showing not just the coronation, but the preparations before it.

The room, ornate and vast, met the occasion: the daunting nature of the new King's responsibilities was shown by surrounding him with rich detail, flags and royal portraiture.

The crew investigated Logue's former consultation rooms, but they were too small to film in. Instead, they found a high, vaulted room not far away in 33 Portland Place.

Eve Stewart, the production designer, liked the mottled, peeling wallpaper there so much that she recreated the effect throughout the entire room. The scenes of the Duke of York at home with his family were also filmed here; showing the Prince living in a townhouse "subverted" expectations of a royal drama.

Elland Road was used for the speech elements of the prince stammering his way through his first public address, and Odsal Stadium was selected because of the resemblance of its curved ends to Wembley Stadium in They filled the terraces with inflatable dummies and over extras dressed in period costumes.

Live actors were interspersed to give the impression of a crowd. Additional people, as well as more ranks of soldiers on the pitch, were added in post-production with visual effects.

His sister, Kate Firth , also a professional voice coach to actors, proposed exercises the King might have done with Logue, and made suggestions on how to imagine Logue's mix of physical and psychological coaching for the film.

In addition, Firth watched archive footage of the King speaking. In an interview with Allan Tyrer published by the British Stammering Association , Swain said: "[It] was very interesting while we were working on the film just to think tonally how far we could go and should go with the strength of George's stammer.

I think a less courageous director than Tom [Hooper] — and indeed a less courageous actor than Colin [Firth] — might have felt the need to slightly sanitise the degree and authenticity of that stammer, and I'm really really pleased that neither of them did.

You find yourself doing it and if I start thinking about it the worse it gets. The film's original score was composed by Alexandre Desplat.

In a film about a man struggling to articulate himself, Desplat was wary of overshadowing the dramaturgy: "This is a film about the sound of the voice.

Music has to deal with that. Music has to deal with silence. Music has to deal with time. The minimalist approach emphasises the protagonist's struggle for control.

The music rises to a climax in the coronation scene. To create a dated sound, the score was recorded on old microphones extracted from the EMI archives which had been specially made for the royal family.

When Desplat later joined the team to write the music, he praised and defended Anwar's suggestion. Hooper further remarked that the stature of the piece helps elevate the status of the speech to a public event.

The score also won a Grammy at the 54th Grammy Awards. All tracks are written by Alexandre Desplat , except where noted.

Hooper employed a number of cinematic techniques to evoke the King's feelings of constriction. He and cinematographer Danny Cohen used wider than normal lenses to photograph the film, typically 14mm, 18mm, 21mm, 25mm and 27mm, where the subtle distortion of the picture helps to convey the King's discomfort.

Roger Ebert noted that the majority of the film was shot indoors, where oblong sets, corridors, and small spaces manifest constriction and tightness, in contrast to the usual emphasis on sweep and majesty in historical dramas.

Hooper widened his scope first to capture Rush's gestures, then full body movements and silhouettes. The approach carried over to Firth as well.

In the first consultation scene, the Duke is squeezed against the end of a long couch framed against a large wall, "as if to use the arm of the sofa as a kind of friend, as a security blanket?

At other times, the camera was positioned very close to the actors to catch the emotion in their faces: "If you put a lens 6 inches from somebody's face, you get more emotion than if you're on a long lens 20 feet away," Cohen said in an interview.

Historical dramas traditionally tend to use "soft light", but Hooper wanted to use a harsher glare, which gives a more contemporary feel, and thus a greater emotional resonance.

To achieve the effect, the lighting team erected huge blackout tents over the Georgian buildings and used large lights filtered through Egyptian cotton.

Several events in the film did not happen, or were exaggerated. The visual blog Information is Beautiful deduced that, while taking creative licence into account, the film was The filmmakers not only tightened the chronology of the events to just a few years but even shifted the timeline of treatment.

The Duke of York actually began working with Logue in October , ten years before the abdication crisis , and the improvement in his speech was apparent in months rather than years as suggested by the film.

I give it every evening at dinner on board. This does not worry me any more. Robert Logue, a grandson of Lionel, doubted the film's depiction of the speech therapist, stating "I don't think he ever swore in front of the King and he certainly never called him 'Bertie'".

Hugo Vickers, an adviser on the film, agreed that the alteration of historical details to preserve the essence of the dramatic story was sometimes necessary.

The high-ranking officials, for instance, would not have been present when the King made his speech, nor would Churchill have been involved at any level, "but the average viewer knows who Churchill is; he doesn't know who Lord Halifax and Sir Samuel Hoare are.

Hitchens and Chotiner also challenged the film's portrayal of Winston Churchill's role in the abdication crisis. In a smart, well-made film "would the true story not have been fractionally more interesting for the audience?

Martin Filler acknowledged that the film legitimately used artistic licence to make valid dramatic points, such as in the probably imagined scene when George V lectures his son on the importance of broadcasting.

Filler cautions that George VI would never have tolerated Logue addressing him casually, nor swearing, and the King almost certainly would have understood a newsreel of Hitler speaking in German.

Filler makes the larger point that both the King and his wife were, in reality, lukewarm towards Churchill because of the latter's support for his brother during the abdication crisis.

It was distributed by Wild Bunch Distribution. The film was initially given a 15 certificate by the British Board of Film Classification , due to a minute-long scene where Logue encourages the King to shout profanities, which he could do without stuttering.

At the London Film Festival, Hooper criticised the decision, questioning how the board could certify the film "15" for bad language but allow films such as Salt and Casino Royale to have "12A" ratings, despite their graphic torture scenes.

Following Hooper's criticism, the board lowered the rating to "12A", allowing children under 12 years of age to see the film if they are accompanied by an adult.

In January Harvey Weinstein , the executive producer and distributor, said he was considering having the film re-edited to remove some profanity, so that it would receive a lower classification and reach a larger audience.

Helena Bonham Carter also defended the film, saying, "[The film] is not violent. It's full of humanity and wit. In Great Britain and Ireland , the film was the highest earning film on its opening weekend.

It holds the record for the highest per-cinema gross of The executive director of Palace Cinemas , Benjamin Zeccola, said customer feedback on the film was spectacular.

I think this is more successful than Slumdog Millionaire and a more uplifting film. It's a good example of a film that started out in the independent cinemas and then spread to the mainstream cinemas.

The remaining profit was to be split equally between the producers and the equity investors. In March Variety estimated that the return could be between fifteen and twenty times that.

In other world, we live in world where the rich is getting richer, the money and power are flowing into the hands of a handful of people who control the rest, until that also breaks down.

Regardless, in many countries today there are still a royal family, although their role today is more about being a public figure and investments, as for example the royalty in this country is sitting on a vast fortune and ownership of many things, meaning that they make their way as they do.

Also filling their function to draw tourism and keep things traditional. With time the team here think that although the times for kings and queens may be over, there are always some seat of power high up in the structural hierarchies which we inevitably land in, weather we make them or are slave to them is a different question all together.

One which we do not wish to explore today. Appreciation for feedback and communication is something that we value and take gladly.

With this film being nominated for so many awards and having a general high profile from square one with its cast under prestigious direction and a decent budget behind it, there has been some discussion to whether or not the film deserved the hype it was surrounded by.

Of course for the team here, and all the other fans of this film this is not really a question. You can go ahead and watch the film if you have not already, and see for yourself, there will always be conflict in the field of so many high shooting and high quality film makers and film projects each year.

However when it comes down to this grand reel, and if you give it the time of day you will see this for yourself, which can bring it down.

Great publicity and a good budget together with famous actors can at times work against a film and the way it is perceived as what is expected becomes almost unrealistic.

As many before us have put it, what made this film overtake other big hitters like the social network that year and bring home big awards, it was simply that beside the fanciful things surrounding this film, it contains a lot of heart.

A lot of something human, and brought to us in a nothing less than brilliant format. If you disagree with our statements, or if you have something that you would like to add, please feel free to get in touch with the team here today, we are always happy to hear from our readers so have no hesitation to email.

If you have suggestions on other things you would like to see on our page, suggestions and feedback is always welcome!

A development that exploded at the end of last century was of course that of films and cinema. With the introduction of moving pictures straight in the homes of the general public, a whole new era of things started.

It gave rise to a whole new domain of storytelling and information relay. This is of course something that the team here is greatly appreciative of and something which brings us much joy.

As many generations before us have said, but as we also claim, especially with the rise of the internet and the accessibility which now exists to a vast majority of people in the western world.

We live in most interesting times. A time in which the art of film making could and still is flourishing although it is now often taking more and more digital shape.

The traditional art of theatre ha taken a massive stop onto the big screen and become a multi-million pound industry. Of course one could focus on the negative of what it brings as well, however that is not something that we aim to do here.

As a great example of what film is today, there is this wonderful film which combines all the greatest aspects of theatre, acting, effect, music and all the rest of it.

The result of which is a masterpiece in its own right, and anyone who has seen the film would most likely agree.

We would like to say thank you to the film makers of today, and especially to those involved in making what is our highest regarded and favourite film created hitherto.

For us, this wonderful film is one of the last great films before what we would label as a long dry spell of Hollywood set in.

There are an increasing number of superhero films and computer generated graphics which stun and amaze the eye, but leave the soul empty.

We would again like to bring tribute to the makers of this film which we wish to see many times still. And hopefully it will be viewed also by many up coming film makers who can find inspiration in drama, human stories and which seek to capture their audience though compelling characters and great adventures.

Not just using bright lights and trickery to draw their audience. The art of movie making is also the art of communication, and as people we understand meaning and value, in the moments when our attention is drawn away from bright lights and sparkles.

It is not our wish to be critical with regards to the current direction of the movie industry, however the team here are of the romantic types, and we can hope by dedicating this site to our favourite films, and a one of the greatest works since the turn of the millennia we will also draw attention to what we would call the fine art of film making.

If you have any feedback for us, if there is any particular article or topic that you would like to see addressed here, or if there is anything that you are wondering in general, feel free to get in touch with the fans of great films here today!

Something that we here feel have not gotten the spot light as often as we would like to see it, is that of representation of those who have some sort of disabil ity.

Most films today are about heroes which are not real or at least not believable as realistic characters. On this point, like so many others the film which the site is dedicated to does the job perfectly.

Of course things are played out in a historical setting, but all the characters are of human nature, and deal with very human issues, even if they are on a grand scale.

A giant beast, having grown out of proportion to fill the continuous demand for producing a box office hit.

A time where film is on the decline is what we see in the general view. However there are still independent and upcoming film makers that take the art of moving images into the twenty-first century in both historically strong and cultural ways, with heroes, heroines and people of the real kind, the kind which we can identify and relate to.

For us, inevitably the thing which is the most magic about watching a film is the ability it carries to transport you into a different time, a different age, and a different story, and that is something which requires both skill, brains and passion to manage.

Giving some thought to the realm of fantasy and theory, hierarchy, monarchy and constructions within a past society, one that which our own was born and developed.
