You will not regret watching it, and you will want to keep talking about its impact. I LOVE this show. To say I love the show probably seems a bit awkward based on the subject matter.
It is dark and depressing and yet you keep watching because you want to know more. The actors are phenomenal. I am sorry this is the last season.
I cannot say enough about the actors in the series, they truly bring life and reality to their characters. This show is such a study in human nature and behavior.
You get so involved with the characters, you laugh and cry along with them. This is the best series I've ever seen. Exquisite in every way.
The performance of Aden Young in the leading role defies description. He absolutely embodies the infinitely complex and heartrending character of Daniel -- only Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody has achieved this level of pathos and a performance that in no way seems "a performance.
Hats off to the creator and main writer Ray McKinnon. How I wish this series wasn't ending! It took me a little while to get used to the slow pace but I soon realized that each and every moment was saturated with nuance and deep subtlety of emotion.
The cast is amazing and the dynamics between the characters are explored in depth as the series progresses. I was truly sorry when it was complete, but the ending was satisfying and did seem the natural evolution of the emotional growth for each character explored.
Aden Young carries the lead role excellently, which is not easy as one must wonder through four seasons whether he was guilty or innocent of the crime for which he pled guilty as a teenager.
He pulls it off. I read recently that this show was originally developed by Walton Goggins and a partner, with Goggins in mind to play the lead.
Goggins is now one of my favorite actors but I think Aden Young is probably better for this role as there is something about Goggins who is slightly edgy and might have tilted the scale slightly more to the "he was guilty" side of the equation.
Young has such an innocence about his good looks that one just WANTS to believe he could never do such a thing, but his own odd behavior, and the fact that he DID confess, makes you wonder all the way through it.
But this story is not about "did he or didn't he" so much as exploring how his family, extended family, friends, enemies and entire community are affected decades later when he is surprisingly released from death row and now needs to learn to live amongst them again.
This is my 1 best ever show I have ever watched. As I said, brilliant. Rectify is not a fast paced story.
However it is possibly the best story telling I have seen on screen in it's mature subject being slowly revealed from what appears initially to be a simple premise.
When I first read it was a story about a man being released from prison after 20 years when new DNA evidence proves he could not have committed the crimes he was convicted for I thought I had a sense of what the story was about.
How naive and arrogant I was. Rectify explores the devastation to the life of the man, his family, even the town left in the wake of both the crime and the horrible police and DA work done in railroading Daniel the main character into a conviction for raping and murdering a teen girl.
As the show matures season by season we are introduced to the many suspects not even questioned at the time, the men who really raped this girl, the horrific and traumatizing events Daniel endured in prison and how his family and towns people try and put their lives back together both after his conviction; but not truly until it is revealed that he didn't actually do it.
Thank God for streaming or I would have never made it through the first few seasons. But because of it I got to enjoy one of the best written stories albeit about a very deep and hurtful set of subjects about not just the characters but humans and human nature.

He returns to his family in the small town where the murder happened. From there, the show is very much about how he, his family, the small town community, and key figures in the criminal justice system respond and adjust to his release and return to society.
Series four is more of the same, but in a good way. Without going into the specifics of what took place before this series it's a show that's essentially light on story so I'm going to avoid spoiling details , it deals with the next stage of Daniel's attempted rehabilitation as everyone involved tries to move on with their lives.
