His biological mother was suffering from alcohol and drug problems and living in poverty along with twelve children including Michael.
She was portrayed as the irresponsible mother in the movie with severe addiction to cocaine but in reality she was struggling to provide for her children and embarrassed by her drug addictions that she was trying to overcome for many years.
The former tackle was born on May 28, in Memphis, Tennessee. In his early real life, Oher did come from a broken family with problematic parents and too many mouths to feed.
As a result, he was doing poorly as a student until he was taken by several foster families and finally adopted by the Tuohy family. In fact, Oher had experienced playing football before and he was quite skilled when he began his life at Briarcrest named Wingate in the movie.
His development at left tackle improved tremendously while he played at the school. Due to his lack of supervision, Michael had a short attention span and little discipline.
He repeated first and second grades. In his first nine years as a student, he attended 11 schools. It did not help that he rarely stayed at a foster home for long, bouncing between various homes.
He was heading in a dangerous direction until Tony Henderson, an auto mechanic, enrolled him at Briarcrest Christian School. The Sandra Bullock-starring film took some creative liberties with its story, one of which irked Oher.
He felt that the movie marginalized the role of Tony Henderson in his life. Henderson was depicted as Tony Hamilton, but Oher hoped the film would better show his influence.
Michael got lucky that Tony was there to help him. He was real quiet and especially stayed to himself. I wanted to be something in life.
In the film, Briarcrest Christian School is renamed Wingate Christian School in another case of creative licensing by the writing team.
Regardless of the name of his school, Oher stuck out like a sore thumb at his new school. Oher was much larger than most kids his age and was not able to blend in the way he intended.
Collins Tuohy, a student at Briarcrest, could not help but tell her parents about the new boy at school that was twice her size. Sean began to monitor Michael closely.
He noticed that Michael would frequently skip eating lunch because he simply did not have money to buy food. He started giving Michael money for lunch and continued to do so throughout the year.
Boswell, in front of the whole class. Oher admitted that he did indeed write the essay. The only major difference is that he read it during his senior year, not his first couple days there.
Leigh Anne, in the film, promptly approaches him and tell him that he will be spending the night with the Tuohys. In reality…. Leigh Anne actually spotted Michael as he strolled around on a crisp November morning while everyone was off for Thanksgiving.
He was wandering around in only a T-shirt and jeans, which he wore to school every day. The only problem was that it was snowing outside on that Tennessee morning.
Unlike in the film, in which she offered a bed to sleep in in their home, Leigh Anne coerced Michael to come shopping with her the next day.
Even though the film claimed Michael went from living on the streets to living with the Tuohys, it took a bit of time before ending up with them.
At first, he continued living with Tony Henderson, the man that had helped get him back on his feet and in school. He also lived with at least five other families for short stints.
When his football coaches realized he had no home, they decided it was time to find him one. The good vibes did not stop there for Michael.
The Tuohys gave Michael something that he had never had in his life. Not only did they give him a roof to sleep under, but they gave him a bed of his own.

The Epic Journey of NFL's Michael Oher
Oher's life through his final year of high school and first year of college is one of the subjects of Michael Lewis ' book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game , and was featured in the Academy Award -winning film The Blind Side.
Born Michael Jerome Williams, Jr. His mother suffered from alcoholism and crack cocaine addiction, and his father, Michael Jerome Williams, was frequently in prison.
He received little attention and discipline during his childhood. Oher played football during his freshman year at a public high school in Memphis. He applied for admission to Briarcrest Christian School at the suggestion of Tony Henderson, an auto mechanic with whom he was living temporarily.
Henderson was enrolling his son at the school to fulfill the dying wish of the boy's grandmother and thought Oher might enroll as well. He did not finish the program, but was admitted when the headmaster realized that his requirement had removed Oher from the public education system.
In , Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy , a couple with a daughter and son attending Briarcrest, allowed Oher to live with them and eventually adopted him.
The family began tending to his needs after becoming familiar with his difficult childhood. They also hired a tutor for him, who worked with him for 20 hours per week.
Oher also earned two letters each in track and basketball. He averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds a game, earning All-State honors by helping lead the basketball team to a 27—6 record, winning the district championship as a senior.
Oher was also a state runner-up in the discus as a senior. Oher's low grades were initially a barrier to his acceptance to an NCAA program.
He eventually increased his 0. Taking and passing the internet courses allowed him to replace Ds and Fs earned in earlier school classes, such as English, with As earned via the Internet.
At the conclusion of his senior season, Oher participated in the U. Army All-American Bowl. The first issue was that Oher's grade-point average GPA was still too low to meet the requirements for a Division I scholarship at the time of the offer from Ole Miss.
That difficulty was corrected by graduation, when Oher completed online classes through Brigham Young University.
Freeze was found guilty of secondary violations for contacting other Memphis-area recruits before joining the Ole Miss staff. Oher started in ten games as a guard during his first season with the Ole Miss Rebels , becoming a first-team freshman All-American.
After shifting to the position of left tackle for the season, he was named to various preseason All-Conference and All-American teams. Oher was also successful academically at Ole Miss, and his tested IQ score increased 20 to 30 points between when he was measured in the public-school systems growing up and when he was measured in college.
The Ravens had acquired the pick from the New England Patriots in exchange for their first- and fifth-round draft picks. The Tuohy family was there to witness his draft day selection.
In week eight, he returned to right tackle. Oher started every game in , eleven at right tackle and five at left tackle. He played right tackle in his first post-season game, January 10, , against the New England Patriots , and did not allow a single sack as the Ravens won 33— Prior to the NFL season , Oher was moved to the left tackle position.
Pro Football Focus graded Oher as the 74th best tackle out of 78 for the season. Dave Gettleman , the Panthers GM, said that Oher would be the Panthers' starting left tackle going into the season despite his struggles in Tennessee, saying "We did our homework on Michael, and we feel very strongly that he can be an answer for us.
He'll be inserted at left tackle, and we'll go from there. Oher played in In the game, the Panthers fell to the Denver Broncos by a score of 24— On July 20, , Oher was released by the Panthers after a failed physical.
Bullock won an Oscar for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. For the city in Macedonia, see Ohrid.
