Plans for a biopic film about Hamilton have existed since months after her shark attack and her subsequent recovery in During Hamilton's media attention, the father of Bethany's friends Chantilly and Tiffany, Roy "Dutch" Hofstetter, became the Hamilton family's media manager.
Hofstetter, in February , envisioned a film based on Bethany's experience, provisionally titled The Bethany Hamilton Story.
Though production had not begun by the end of , in January Sean McNamara was announced to be directing the biographical film. The book was considered "a straightforward account" that was targeted to Christian readers, so the filmmakers met with the Hamilton family to determine if there were any unpublished conflicts that could be highlighted in the film.
They discovered that the incident had strained the family, that family members questioned their Christian faith, and that Bethany Hamilton struggled with her physical appearance and how boys would perceive her.
The media attention on the family was described by Brookwell as "a second shark attack" that had made their lives uncomfortably public.
McNamara, Brookwell, Hofstetter and Douglas Schwartz spent several years raising money for production. Before the film entered production, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired distribution rights for North America and most other territories.
Leonetti shot on 35mm film. During filming, Robb wore a green sleeve on her arm so visual effects could be included later. During post-production, the VFX company Engine Room worked on arm-removal shots, digitally inserting the upper arm residuum in place of Robb's green sleeve.
Prior to the film's commercial release, it was screened for religious leaders. A scene in which Dennis Quaid's character reads the Bible in the hospital at his daughter's bedside had the words "Holy Bible" digitally removed from the cover.
Bethany Hamilton's father said that David Zelon, an executive at Mandalay Pictures, lobbied to reduce the Soul Surfer ' s Christian elements so the film could appeal more to non-Christian audiences.
The Hamilton family objected, and the words "Holy Bible" were restored in the scene in a follow-up screening.
Of course, the core of the story is the terrible shark attack that happened to Bethany Hamilton. That kind of thing is universally thought to be so horrific that merely surviving at all would be a triumph of human will.
But Bethany Hamilton transcended that by leaps and bounds to become an international icon for what it means to be courageous in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds.
Her courage, strength, perseverance, dedication, work ethic, professionalism and just plain bare faith have become a model for success to a large number of people all over the world.
She has justly earned every accolade, every compliment and every success that I feel sure she feels privileged to have received. Oh, and she's gorgeous too.
With that incredible young woman's story as the fodder for the film it was a walk in the park for the film makers. All they had to do was tell the truth and let the facts speak for themselves.
But that is something Hollywood has a lot of trouble doing. But this simple formula seems to be what they did, and did masterfully.
The setting for the film is one of the most breathtaking on earth, so that was easy to enjoy. The cinematography was excellent as was, of course, the special CGI effects.
Makeup and costuming didn't have much of a stretch, letting the beauty of the islands, its people and the athleticism, beauty and youth of the principal actors deliver what artificiality never could.
Much of the story centered on these two girls so it was a lot for them to carry. I can imagine how it must have been difficult for Robb to try to give credence to a part depicting someone who is so genuinely bigger than life - even legendary.
I think she did a terrific job. I was taken in by watching her nuances of emotion throughout the film. She's no rookie but this was a real challenge that she met with talent and grace.
Nicholson was a perfect fit as Hamilton's friend; adding a few smiles to the tension we all certainly felt watching the story unfold. Real friendships should never be underplayed and she came across as a solid, loving friend to Bethany.
I think I'd be genuinely shocked if either of them ever did poorly in any role. Nelson as Dr. Rovinksy, Bethany's attending physician.
All of them made the film that much better and I enjoyed every minute each was on screen. Perhaps the most interesting to me is watching Quaid.
He's become quite a versatile and talented actor. Last but not least was Carrie Underwood as Sarah Hill. This is the first time I've seen her do any acting and I can say she did a terrific job.
I really liked her playing the part of someone who was so important to Bethany's success and she did so with genuine warmth and friendliness.
I was very well entertained as was everyone who attended the screening with me. I left the theater with the thought that I wish much success to the film - it's a masterful character tale for all young people the world over - and ever increasing success to Bethany Hamilton herself.

The documentaries on Bethany Hamilton in the special features and the credits of the movie showing the real one-armed Bethany surfing are the only better stuff for me.

The attack was quick and she claims she didn't even know what hit her. The shark bite amputated her left arm and she almost died from blood loss.
As soon as the stitches were removed, Bethany returned to competitive surfing. I found her story very motivational, although I didn't believe the scene where her father was having routine knee surgery on the day of the shark attack and got pulled from the operating room so they could perform surgery on Bethany.
I thought it was unnessary Hollywood drama, until I read an article were the real Bethany insists this part was true! The father didn't cross paths with her in the hallway like the movie shows, though.
He was shoved in a corner and forgotten about! I think some parts of her recovery were glossed over. Still, I'm a sucker for a true story, especially one so inspirational.

I found myself cringing a lot at the laughably and poorly written dialogue, the mediocre acting Sorry Carrie Underwood, you're a devout Christian and an EXCELLENT musician, which is all very inspiring, but acting ain't your thing , and the poor execution in storytelling.
Let me tell you, there are some horrifyingly, awful Christian movies out there. You'll be pleasantly welcomed by the B-movie feel "Soul Surfer" has. It's not preachy or pretentious; deep down, there's a lot of purity and heart injected into this movie.
There's a particular scene involving the Bethany, the main protagonist, that effectively agitates the audience's emotions, all without a word being said.
Even the message was good-hearted, pure, and a relief, especially among a movie industry filled with dark and unsettling themes.
Surprisingly, "Soul Surfer" as a Christian movie, manages to catch a couple of waves, but that's where it ends. The movie suffers from horrible pacing issues, mainly due to the fact that the incident that occurs, and the result afterwards are the only solid material "Soul Surfer" has for its narrative.
The spaces in between are nothing more than fillers, and what dull fillers they are. The editing is sporadically all over the place, and the dialogue makes me shudder.
Phew, this is one big cheeseball. Nevertheless, it's a good movie for children and is a surprisingly effective Christian-themed film -- just don't take your film critique crew to watch this.

Apr 08, The film was so so. On the positive, the film was well casted. Annasophia Robb shines as Bethany Hamilton. Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt do a great job as her folks.
Carrie Underwood also does a great acting job here too. Also there are some really great surfing scenes in the film. The music is good too.
The problem that I had with the film was the style of the film. The style of the film, felt too much like a made for TV movie that I would see on the Lifetime Channel.
They should have opened the film up with the accident, followed by a flashback of scenes showing up to the accident. Then show the recovery and comeback.
That is the way, I would have done this film. Despite the flaws, I still recommend this film for the performances, especially Annasophia Robb.
