The system seemed to simply give him what he wanted. Which other than basic bodily functions, amounts to a cage and punishment. And that scenario alone opens up all of the questions of volition, English society, genetics, the works.
So the film may have sold the real man short, but Hardy gives it his all for better or for worse of that depiction and seems to be staying true to his view of the man in his performance and that's really what makes the film worth watching.
Customers of Prime Video should be offered the option to purchase a movie after rental. My husband and I love this movie and have watched it a few times before, on Netflix, so we recently decided to purchase it.
Unfortunately, it wasn't the copy we expected. There seemed to be missing entire scenes, as we remembered different things happening from previous viewings.
I'm going to attempt to get my money back. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this film is one of Nicholas Winding Refn's lighter efforts.
There is humor in almost every scene, and Bronson, despite his violent tendencies, is presented as a guy who just wants to make light of his situation.
Tom Hardy buffed up for the role, and his insight into the man is as good as it gets. He knows they expect the worst from him, so he'll strip naked, cover himself in grease, and create a scene, so the guards can't get a grip on him.
Bronson never killed anyone, and, despite a botched robbery in his youth, can't be accused of anything but bi-polar stress.
The mental institutions didn't want to deal with him, so he went back in the prison system. While paroled, he looked confused, and eventually did something stupid that put him back in prison.
It's actually a simple story about a misunderstood person. The facts may have been sugar-coated, and I admit I don't really know the man, but Bronson, as presented in this film, it almost adorable.
The cunning and behavior were given purpose, and his humanity is left intact. In extras, Hardy had met with Bronson, and said he'd present an honest character.
Regardless of any factual accuracy, Refn's film is actually delightful and intelligent, maybe as seen through the eyes of Bronson, as he sees himself.
Despite how others watch this film, it's not the downer you might expect. A very courageous, varied and unflinching performance from Tom Hardy.
I'm VERY impressed. Hollywood didn't glamorize the systems in place that transformed a man into beast. It's actually not fun or funny when people do this in real life, like the real Charles Bronson Michael Peterson.
The difference between MMA and this guy is that the other MMA fighter is going into the cage asking for a fight because, hey, that's his job.
But the prison guards and other inmates and general citizen population are existing to exist and aren't asking for a fight. This movie glorifies it anyway.

One person found this helpful. Peterson as Hardy portrays him has next to no redeeming features; Britain's most famous prisoner is a psychopath through and through, a man whose ostensible charisma is simply a ploy to justify his irrepressible desire to inflict violence on others.
In 'Bronson', Peterson is manipulative but not intelligent; engaging but not likable - a pure but blind force of nature. When he smirks capriciously, there's nothing behind his eyes.
Although 'Bronson' is a biopic, Nicholas Winding Refn consciously channels the spirit of 'A Clockwork Orange', and, telling the story as a stream of consciousness through Peterson's mind, injects it with speed.
Surrealism is interwoven and at times blended with the events of Peterson's life, which he narrates both to a passive audience and directly to the viewer.
He fancies himself a born performer, and the audience dutifully clap at his skits and gags. This is, after all, Peterson's hour, just as his whole life has been his hour.
The key people in his life - his parents, his ex-wife, his child, his lover, his boxing manager, his art teacher - are really just incidental to him, props on the stage.
Indeed, it's unclear if some of them even exist as he portrays them. It's an uncompromising vision of how a psychopath sees the world, the cinematography stark and the soundtrack compulsive.
But his will has no direction; it's simply manifest of his desire to perform, and his proneness to boredom - and the film implies that this is the reason why his incarceration extended from seven to thirty-four years.
Cool film, great Tom Hardy. Why I am not entitely satisfied : total lack of subtitles - as someone with so far only a slight hearing impairment, it is very tiring to try to follow dialogue especially when slang, dialect or poor articulation is present.

I must say I was not disappointed! It is beautifully filmed and is a wacky, crazy, artistic explosion of violence and madness!
