I love the Ju-On and the Grudge franchise. I am an avid lover of canon storytelling and extremely protective over stories that I love.
Remakes are not my favorite thing in the world, so I went into this film having low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. This is not a remake, but a side story about another american caregiver who was working in Japan and brought the curse back with her.
The acting is good, Lin Shaye is magnificently creepy, and seeing John Cho in this kind of role makes me want to check out more stuff he's been in, since the only things I've seen him in consist of comedy which he's also very good at.
As for the people disappointed that there was no resolution, when was there ever any resolution in this franchise? How do you kill a curse?
You DON'T. That's what makes it scary. Enjoy the ride for what it is! This film is able to tell a grudge story without taking anything away from the original, which is the best part.
There is absolutely nothing to love about this love except the fact that great talent was wasted on a terrible script and poor direction.
You felt nothing for all the characters who lived in that house because you had three competing stories that never got developed. And characters that fell flat.
Don't waste your time. Watch the original Ju-On or the first American remake. Five dollar rental down the drain.
First half was actually The attempts at scares were pitiful. All throughout. Babies with medical problems, mental illness, cancer, trauma, mourning the death of a loved one, these are meaty dramatic staples and at first everybody gets to sink their teeth in and look really sad.
This is a Grudge movie, and the whole point is, once you enter the house, you're screwed, I get that. But the problem is, it's done with no finesse, no legitimately scary or tense scenes, people just start dropping with minimal blood and bad editing.
And the first half set-ups aren't paid off at all! They were just filler. No brickwork storytelling a staple this series is known for, what with its interconnected stories and multiple timelines , no irony, no allegory, no nothing.
Just boom, dead, next storyline, boom, dead. There is a scene at the film's climax that I actually did enjoy. The music got good with an intense, original sound effect that tickled the nerve endings, the main character had a plan, the "villain" was doing it's own thing while she was running around the house, it was simplistic but fun.
I knew what was coming after that high, because if you've seen these movies how could you not, but the way it was executed just like every other storyline in the film was so poor, so haphazard and lazy, it was insulting.
It felt like a middle finger to the audience. This entire film feels exactly like that. A guy you know pretty well goes in for a handshake and when you reach for his hand he pulls back and gives you a middle finger, and you realize this isn't that guy you knew; it was some jerk wearing his face.
Two Stars for the cast and climax. That was bad. That was real bad. I love all horror but this is a disgrace of a remake and every character is absolute garbage.

Disclaimer, I love horror even not that great horror but this one was so by the numbers, not scary and had none of the atmosphere from the first Grudge movies.
Also, was it not set in Japan for budget reasons? Disappointing as I liked the first two American versions. Shout out to the amazing actresses in this film though especially Betty Gilpin, Andrea Riseborough and Lin Shaye who seemed like she was having fun with her character and was a bright spot.
If it's free and you want a horror in the background not the worst choice. Do not and I repeat, do not waste your time watching this.
The actors and actresses worked with what they had. The idea behind the story is not bad. The directing, editing and execution are the problem.
